REDEFINING SUCCESS

“The ultimate, hidden truth of the world is that it is something that we make and could just as easily make differently.”
– David Graeber
You’ve built something extraordinary—an organisation, a movement, a creative vision that challenges the status quo. But in the pursuit of impact, you may find yourself disconnected from the deeper ‘why’ that started it all. The weight of leadership, the sacrifices made, and the relentless drive to succeed can leave even the most visionary leaders feeling burned out, stuck, or out of alignment with their values. Many of my clients are ‘successful’ in one way or another. But they have been brought to their knees chasing a definition of ‘success’ that is not sustainable. Fame, money, status, and impact did not bring them to the promised land of
everlasting joy. The truth is, we live in an achievement society. We are conditioned from the earliest age to believe we can be and do anything we want to. On social media, we scroll through a catwalk of models of success, each post
drip-feeding our nervous systems with a toxic mix of envy, anxiety, and not-enoughness.
British psychotherapist Adam Phillips says that we are “haunted by the myth of our potential, of what we might have it in ourselves to be or do. The myth of our potential can make of our lives a perpetual falling short.”
And the particular idea of success entrenched in our culture is about the lone wolf, the individual hero who has battled against the odds to rise to the top. We celebrate the influencers, the big hitters, the bestsellers.

And the particular idea of success entrenched in our culture is about the lone wolf, the individual hero who has battled against the odds to rise to the top. We celebrate the influencers, the big hitters, the bestsellers.
But behind the veil of our achievement obsessions lies a different story.
A story of loneliness, burnout and breakdown.
We destroy our habitat chasing infinite growth.
We destroy our minds and bodies chasing infinite potential.
As we compulsively chase success, ramping up our productivity, we can negatively impact those around us.
- We surround ourselves with successful people, and lose touch with old friends.
- We are so busy trying to scale our business, we don’t notice our child has been self-harming.
- We are so focused on ‘growing our community’, we don’t help the elderly neighbour next door.
- We grow our personal brand, and lose touch with our true self.
Enough is enough, I say!
We need to stop, gather together, and take time to redefine success in a way that feels true, authentic, and sustainable. Sigmund Freud noticed that his patients kept repeating the same patterns that were causing them to suffer, and he gave this a name – ‘repetition compulsion’. That which has not been understood inevitably reappears; like an unlaid ghost, it cannot rest until the mystery has been resolved and the spell broken.
Are you ready to break the spell?
YOU
- You are a leader – a CEO, founder, or social entrepreneur—driven to solve meaningful social problems.
- You have achieved a remarkable impact at scale.
- Yet you feel stuck in patterns that leave you burned out and disconnected from what truly matters.
- You are constantly pouring yourself into your mission, but the weight of responsibility has left you depleted.
- You are questioning whether the sacrifices you’ve made—your time, your health, your relationships—are worth the cost.
- You are ready to get radical, break the spell and redefine success in a way that feels sustainable and authentic.
